SUMMARY:Meet author Nicole Wong of the Mahjong Project. Learn about the story of the Asian diaspora through the history of mahjong.
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Thursday\, May 28 at 5:30 p.m. in the Oak Room at
the Main Library for a book talk with Nicole Wong\, author of Mahjong:
House Rules from Across the Asian Diaspora. Then\, at 6:30 PM\, stay for an
hour of casual Mahjong gameplay.\n\nCopies of this book will be available
for purchase at this event.\n\nAbout the Book\n\nFor many third-culture
kids in the Asian diaspora\, the sight and sound of clacking mahjong tiles
conjures deep-seated memories. Some learned to play alongside elders\,
while others watched from afar. Maybe you only distantly know of the game
through movies or articles about pop-up mahjong nights.\n\nWhether you are
looking to reconnect with the game\, pick up a new hobby\, or introduce
others to a favorite pastime\, Mahjong is a step-by-step guide for new and
seasoned players alike. With gorgeous photography by Chinatown Pretty‘s
Andria Lo and detailed instructional diagrams\, author Nicole Wong walks
readers through the gameplay\, strategy\, and history of mahjong\, as well
as popular styles of play like American mah-jongg\, Japanese riichi
mahjong\, and more.\n\nWith Mahjong as your guide\, learn the history and
evolution of this beautiful game while you connect with friends\, family\,
and culture. You may even write your own house rules.\n\nMeet Nicole
Wong\n\nNicole Wong is a writer and audio producer based in Oakland\,
California. She started The Mahjong Project in 2019—part instructional
guide\, part oral history project\, to document her family’s house rules
and place them in the broader history and diaspora of the game itself. She
has been featured in The Washington Post\, The Associated Press\, NPR\,
Axios\, Vogue and more.\n\nTo learn more about The Mahjong Project\, check
 out www.themahjongproject.com or @themahjongproject on Instagram.\n\nThis
event is organized in collaboration with AACP and OCA\, with sponsorship
from the San Mateo Public Library Foundation and Asian American Library
 Cultural Committee.
