Festival in the Library
** Originally at Central Park, event will now be at the Library and updates to lineup will follow, located at 55 W. 3rd Ave., San Mateo, CA 94402**
On Saturday, April 13 from 10am-4pm San Mateo’s Central Park will hum. Central Stage will feature library-related programming, the lawn will hold 40+ artist and artisan vendors, food trucks will provide snacking options, and a Kids’ Zone, anchored by Parks & Rec, will offer games for the little ones.
On Central Stage
10am • Welcome | SMPLF’s Sarah Meier-Heredia and City Librarian James Moore kick off the day and introduce our special four-legged guests from the popular Paws for Tales program.
10:15-10:30am • SM Reads | SMPL hosts over 20 story times a month where many kids fall in love with reading. San Mateo City Manager Alex Khojikian and Congressman Kevin Mullin read their children’s favorite books.
10:30-11am • SM Enchants | Library veteran guest performer Steve the Magic Guy will captivate all patrons, especially our youngest.
11am-12pm • SM Drums | Percussionist and art therapist Jeni Swerdlow brings DRUMMM, a hands-on drum circle to the park. Everyone – from babies to seniors – are invited to join the Library favorite.
12-1:30pm • SM Shakes | What could be more classic than Shakespeare in the Park? Many of you will be familiar with the SF Shakespeare Festival which takes their one hour productions on tour through schools and, of course, libraries. Come have lunch on the lawn and enjoy “As You Like It” followed by Q&A with the cast.
1:30-2pm • SM Moves | The SMPLF loves to showcase the budding talent in our community through our Take-A-Break series at the Main Library. Under the tutelage of Marisa Castillo, Aragon Dance takes the stage with a variety of styles including K-Pop and a number from Grease.
2-2:15pm • SM Seeks Awards | For those who participate in the scavenger hunt that takes you to all three branches of the SMPL system, this is the moment of the big reveal. From the pool of complete and accurate submissions, five winners will be drawn. Winners do not need to be present to win, but we would love to congratulate you in person.
2:15-2:45pm • SM Strums | Did you know the Library has ukuleles available to check out? Come to the park for a community ukulele jam — all levels welcome!
2:45-3pm • SM Declaims | April is the time to honor Libraries … and also poets! Two-time San Mateo County Poet Laureate Aileen Cassinetto honors National Poetry Month with us by reading some of her powerful work.
3-4pm • SM Remembers | We’re proud to present Bay Area jazz artist Tiffany Austin who has sung at the SMPL courtesy of the African American Cultural Committee. Tiffany will offer a Gershwin retrospective. KCSM’s Dr. Robert Franklin will be on hand to talk about the 100th anniversary of the American composer’s Rhapsody in Blue.
