The Aurio Trio In-Person

Join us for a musical conversation event for the entire family!  The Aurio Trio is concert pianist Karen HutchinsonZachariah Spellman, principal tuba player of the San Francisco Opera orchestra, and Rufus Olivier, principal bassoonist of the San Francisco Opera and Ballet orchestras. Together, they present a program of familiar favorites, plus their commentary and zany humor.

Karen Hutchinson, pianist, is a native of Hillsborough who now has a worldwide solo career. She has performed with the San Francisco Symphony, the Los Angeles Philharmonic Institute Orchestra at the Hollywood Bowl, the Scottish Chamber Orchestra and the symphony orchestras of Detroit, Denver, Oakland and Shreveport. She has appeared at Lincoln Center, Washington, D.C., Carnegie Recital Hall, Merkin Concert Hall, Herbst Theatre, and the American Cultural Center in Paris. Ms. Hutchinson studied piano at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique in Paris as a student of Mme. Jeanne-Marie Darre and received her Bachelor and Master of Music at the San Francisco Conservatory.  

Zachariah Spellman has been principal tubist for the San Francisco Opera Orchestra since 1977 and for the Marin Symphony since 1980. He has taught at San Francisco State University since 1982. He is also a member of the Golden Gate Brass. Spellman has been a featured soloist with the San Francisco Symphony, Fremont Symphony, Contra Costa Chamber Orchestra, Peninsula Symphony, Bay Bones and Youth Philharmonic of Portland, Oregon. Spellman has also performed with the San Francisco Ballet, Manhattan Philharmonic and the San Francisco, Sacramento, Santa Rosa, Silicon Valley, Oakland East Bay, California, Oregon and Houston symphonies. He has been a sideman for Mel Torme, George Shearing and Ray Charles. In addition to his San Francisco Opera releases, Mr. Spellman is featured on the recordings of David Grisman, Songs of our Fathers, the Bay Area's Thoth, "Those Darned Accordions" and Big Lou's Polka Casserole, as well as many TV and radio commercials that are produced in the Bay Area. 

Rufus Olivier is the Principal Bassoonist with the San Francisco Ballet and the San Francisco Opera Orchestras. At 21 years of age he became a bassoonist with the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra before moving to his current positions with the Ballet and Opera. Mr. Olivier has been guest soloist with numerous orchestras throughout the United States, Japan, and France, premiered new works for the bassoon and was featured in live radio recitals in Los Angeles. He is a founding member of the Anchor Chamber Players, the Midsummer Mozart Orchestra, and the Stanford Wind Quintet. He has recorded many movie, video, CD and TV soundtracks including Disney’s Never Cry Wolf, San Francisco Opera’s Grammy nominated CD Orphée et Eurydice, and won a Grammy for the soundtrack Elmo in Grouchland. Prior to arriving in the Bay Area, Mr. Olivier performed with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra, and the Goldofsky Opera Tours. He is on the music faculties of Stanford University, Azusa Pacific University and Mills College. In February 1993 Mayor Frank M. Jordan Awarded Mr. Olivier The Seal of The City and County of San Francisco, in recognition of his “Exemplary Accomplishment On The Occasion of Black History Month.”
